István Lajkó (piano)
Young Liszt once described the role of piano transcriptions in musical life by saying: “A piano transcription relates to the orchestral work like an engraving to a painting: it multiplies the original, makes it accessible to everyone, and although it may not recreate its colours, it can capture the light and shadow.” The piano transcription, as a genre, owes much of its popularity to Franz Liszt. “For every pianist, it is both a joy and a challenge to showcase the almost limitless possibilities and tonal colours of the instrument, and to come as close as possible to the original sound of the works”, says pianist István Lajkó. In his concert, the audience will encounter compositions by Russian composers, featuring both popular and lesser-known ballet and opera excerpts, as well as piano transcriptions of songs. One of the evening’s highlights is the pianist’s own arrangement of a Prokofiev opera excerpt, as well as Zoltán Kocsis’ arrangement of popular Vocalise by Rachmaninov, with Lajkó’s own addition.
