The St. Matthew Passion – one of the most significant works in music history – was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) during his time as the choirmaster of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, early in his tenure. The premiere took place on Good Friday, 1724, at Leipzig’s St. Nicholas Church. This oratorio, depicting the Passion of Christ, is the composer’s largest work and was part of the Holy Week services. However, it continues to be frequently performed in concert halls, especially during this time of year – as it will be now, as part of the Haydneum Liszt Academy concert series, featuring the Purcell Choir, the Orfeo Orchestra, and a first-class international soloist ensemble, conducted by György Vashegyi.
